Calling any East European Borat is Racist
By Gail Escolme, 24 August 2011 –
A Leeds employment tribunal has ruled that a man from Poland who was nick-named Borat at work was a victim of direct race discrimination and awarded him £2250.
This is a warning to employers who allow racist banter to go on in the work place. They may find themselves having to defend similar claims at tribunal.
Examples of other racist nick names are to call an Irishman a “thick paddy” or an African employee “kunta kinte”.
Employers must train their employees not to make such comments, which would not be made to employees of other nationalities.
Employers must ensure they have an anti-bullying and harassment policy in place and ensure that everyone abides by it.
